How to select an RTO system for VOC abatement

An RTO purchase should start with exhaust data and compliance risk, not only equipment price. The same airflow can require very different system designs depending on VOC load, solvent type, safety requirements and site boundary.

RTO equipment for VOC abatement

1. Confirm whether RTO is the right process

RTO systems are typically used for continuous solvent VOC exhaust where high destruction efficiency and heat recovery are required. They are common in printing, coating, drying, chemical and materials production. However, some exhaust streams may need pretreatment, concentration, catalytic oxidation or another route.

2. Prepare the data suppliers actually need

  • Total airflow and exhaust point distribution.
  • VOC concentration range and peak fluctuation.
  • Full solvent composition, including halogen, sulfur, silicon or corrosive components.
  • Temperature, humidity, dust, oil mist and operating schedule.
  • Emission limit, available fuel, power standard and installation space.

3. Compare scope, not just price

A reliable proposal should clarify the chamber structure, ceramic media, burner, fan, valves, LEL monitoring, bypass, PLC/HMI, ducting boundary, stack, installation support, commissioning scope and spare parts. Low quotations often hide exclusions.

4. Ask about safety logic

VOC systems require serious safety review. Buyers should ask how the supplier handles LEL monitoring, purge sequences, emergency bypass, fresh air dilution, fan interlocks, temperature alarms and explosion relief where applicable.
