How to select an RTO system for VOC abatement

A regenerative thermal oxidizer is usually considered when a factory needs high VOC destruction efficiency, stable continuous operation and reliable compliance with outlet emission limits. The right design starts with process data rather than only air volume.

Data buyers should prepare

  • Total airflow and number of exhaust points
  • VOC concentration and concentration fluctuation range
  • Solvent composition and any halogen, sulfur, silicon or corrosive component
  • Exhaust temperature, humidity, dust or oil mist condition
  • Operating hours, local emission target and available fuel

A serious supplier should explain the equipment boundary, safety configuration, expected utility consumption, control logic, documentation scope and installation responsibilities before the buyer compares price.

RTO systems for printing and flexible packaging lines

Flexible packaging and printing plants often generate solvent exhaust from gravure or flexographic printing, lamination, coating and drying ovens. These processes can have long operating hours and strong compliance pressure, making RTO or Rotor RTO systems common options for VOC treatment.

Key engineering questions

  • How many printing or laminating lines are connected?
  • Is exhaust collected separately from ovens, coating heads and workshops?
  • What solvents are used in ink, adhesive and cleaning processes?
  • Can recovered heat be reused by drying ovens or process air?

For high airflow with lower VOC concentration, a zeolite rotor concentrator combined with an RTO may reduce system size and fuel consumption. For higher concentration exhaust, a direct RTO configuration may be more suitable after safety review.

What affects RTO system cost?

RTO system cost is not determined by airflow alone. Buyers should compare supplier offers only after confirming the same technical boundary, safety configuration and installation responsibility.

Major cost factors

  • Airflow capacity, VOC load and expected destruction efficiency
  • Two-bed, three-bed, rotary concentrator or catalytic configuration
  • Chamber size, steel structure, insulation and ceramic media volume
  • Burner, fan, dampers, valves, instruments, PLC and HMI brands
  • LEL monitoring, bypass, explosion relief and other safety options
  • Ductwork, stack, heat recovery, export packing and commissioning support

A low initial quotation may exclude ductwork, controls, stack, instruments, commissioning or spare parts. A reliable quotation should clearly state what is included and what is excluded.
